People love a fixer-upper, but apparently they don’t like it if you fix things up too much, as one woman recently learned when she posted a video of herself cleaning 126 years of grime and dirt off the exterior of her home.

Katie Woods posted a TikTok showing a team power-washing the outside of her Leeds home, which was built in 1898 and apparently hasn’t been cleaned since. Not only did cleaning the home make sense, because who wants to live in a dirty home, but it also had the added bonus of allowing them to see damage on the brickwork so they could fix it.

Unfortunately, this wasn’t a good enough reason for some commenters, who immediately began venting their frustrations at Woods’ decision to clean her own home. “No, that is the history and charm of that home washed away,” one commenter cried. Others criticized the power-washing method used, arguing that it was too harsh for the stone.

Some people were impressed, however — “Washed the industrial revolution right offa there!” one commenter joked — while others outright defended Woods, with one comment reading, “‘You washed away the history’ that’s literally just a mineral deposit.”

In a follow-up video, Woods hit back at her critics, compiling all of their complaints into a video highlighting the fact that the house literally sparkles now because it’s so clean. Knowing that people on the internet are incredibly nosy, Woods also shared a video showing us the inside of the home, and it’s gorgeous — no wonder she wanted the exterior to look as beautiful as possible.

She’s continuing to spar with critics, too. One recently commented, “It looked so much more natural with the outside walls how they were,” to which she responded, “You might need to let that go.”

There are plenty of dilapidated homes covered in grime around the U.K. — if you’re that attached to them, go visit one of those and let Woods preserve her home in peace.
